Azer Pasha Nematov

(1947 - 2023)

Azer Pasha Nematov was born on August 13th, 1947 in Baku, in the family of an outstanding theater director and honored art worker Zafar Nematov. 

In 1970, he graduated from the Azerbaijan State Institute of Arts named after M.Aliyev, to the "Theater Director" faculty, a course of People's Artist of the USSR Mehdi Mammadov.

 He began his creative activity at the Azerbaijan State Theater for Young Spectators in 1972, where he worked for many years as an assistant director, stage director, chief director and artistic director.

In 1974-76, A.P.Nematov worked as a trainee director at the Leningrad State Theater of Young Spectators in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), then he repeatedly participated in theater festivals, conferences and other theater forums in countries such as Greece, Turkey, Russia and Georgia.

 Since 1990, the plays of A.P.Nematov on the stage of the Azerbaijan State Academic National Drama Theater have drawn the attention of the Azerbaijani theater community for their novelty and originality.

Azer Pasha Nematov masterfully combines the features of the modern world theater, avant-garde and the Azerbaijani national theater in his work. The director’s performances with extraordinary creative thinking and high artistic taste were successfully shown and awarded the highest awards not only in Azerbaijan, but also at international theater festivals in Tashkent, Tbilisi and Moscow. The performances were also shown at the Black Sea Countries Festival in Turkey and the 1st World Theater Festival of the Turkic World in honor of the 700th anniversary of the Ottoman Empire.

In addition to a good music taste, the director is known as a talented artist who staged performances in various theaters of our country and cities of the former Soviet Union. His works were also shown at the exhibition of theater artists in Ukraine and the I Biennale exhibition of theater artists in Azerbaijan.

Azer Pasha Nematov has successfully organized a number of festivals, anniversaries and other theatrical events during his activities. Under his leadership, the Union of Theater Workers of Azerbaijan has become an organization that plays an important role in the theatrical life of the country.

He was awarded the "Honored Art Worker" title in 1987 and the title of "People's Artist" in 2002 for his activities in the field of theatrical art. He was also awarded the “Humai” National Social Award in 1997, the “Golden Dervish” prize in 1998 and 2003, and the “Order of Glory” on the occasion of his 60th birthday, in August 2007.

Azer Pasha Nematov passed away on April 9, 2023 in Baku.
